WHEN I arrived in Cannes the film festival was already well under
way. All aspects of the movie industry had, for five days, been
illuminating the slither of French coastline. The glamour of the
stars, the creativity and style of the great movie directors, the
hardened cool of the producers and the uncompromising buyers who
converge on Cannes to determine which films will get distribution
made up the mix.
I arrived to find that they were all well into the 12-day long
session of wining and dining each other in a fabulous and
competitive attempt to solidify their own professional standing. The
air smelled of business and garlic, deals and Coquilles St Jacques,
