AN investigation has been launched by government scientists into
the health effects of rising caffeine consumption amid fears that it
could lead to a reduction in fertility and an increase in
miscarriages.
Intake of the chemical - the world's most popular drug - is
soaring among young British women because of the growth of US-style
cafe culture and the boom in the market for caffeine-rich drinks
such as Red Bull and XTC.
The Food Standards Agency has now asked its expert panel on
toxicology to examine a series of recent studies on the effects of
caffeine on all aspects of reproduction, including fertility and the
foetus.
