BEING the director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival
sounds like most people's idea of a dream job. All you do is swan
around the world watching films and selecting the best ones for your
own event. The reality is a little different as directors often have
to beg, plead and implore distributors and filmmakers who have their
own ideas on the best places to secure exposure for their work. A
programme has to please the critics and make sense at the box-
office and superstar talent can be the most reluctant of travellers.
The dream job soon becomes a nightmare.
