Article: Hospitals run out of beds for intensive care

SCOTLAND has run out of intensive care beds as the National Health Service buckles under the strain of a massive surge in hospital admissions during the flu epidemic.

Experts admit that critically ill patients had to be treated in makeshift units as demand for intensive care was stretched to 10% beyond the maximum capacity. The flu outbreak is officially at epidemic levels in some parts of the country and set to rise further this week.

Official figures given to Scotland on Sunday reveal that last week all 133 Scottish intensive care beds were occupied and a further 12 critically ill patients had to be treated in specially created intensive care beds.
