SCIENTISTS are urging the Food Standards Agency to investigate
aspartame, the key ingredient of modern sweeteners, over claims that
it plays a major role in aggravating a range of conditions including
heart disease.
New research to be presented in Scotland later this month will
allege that aspartame, a low-calorie additive included in thousands
of food and drink products, may be toxic to some individuals.
The research, the work of US doctors, will reopen the safety
debate that has surrounded aspartame since discovery in the mid-
1960s.
Since first being approved by the US regulatory authorities in
1981 it has become one of the chief ingredients used by the diet
