Article: Scientists reveal key to good night's sleep: go to bed later

SCIENTISTS have discovered they can wean four out of five chronic insomniacs off sleeping pills by telling them not to go to bed until they are tired.

The treatment, which is part of a new bedtime routine that may not actually involve going to bed, is being devised by sleep experts at Glasgow University's department of psychology.

The research, to be published later this year, could make inroads into the pounds 60m lost to the Scottish economy annually through lost productivity as a result of sleeplessness - a condition experienced by 10% of the adult population. It could also cut the pounds 2m spent in Scotland on sleeping pills.
