TOMORROW, a year that is inescapably associated with science
fiction will finally become fact. Not surprisingly, Arthur C
Clarke's novel 2001: A Space Odyssey has been reissued to mark the
occasion.
How much of it has come true? Well, space stations exist, but not
the graceful rotating wheels depicted in Stanley Kubrick's film. The
ill-fated Mir will fall to earth (or more hopefully water) some time
in 2001, while opinion is still divided on whether the new
International Space Station will ever produce enough scientific
knowledge to justify its enormous cost.
Contrary to the visions of Clarke and others, today there are no
