LEADING councillors representing all political parties have given
their backing to proportional representation as part of a package of
radical measures to reform local government.
Labour, the Scottish National Party, Liberal Democrat, Tory and
Independent groups on the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities
yesterday unanimously approved the introduction of proportional
representation (PR) for the election of councils.
Their recommendation will go to the McIntosh commission on local
government which is to report to the Scottish parliament on ways of
making councils more accountable to their local electorates.
