Article: Scrap nuclear weapons, say Cold War veterans

TWO veterans of the Cold War yesterday urged the British and American governments to get rid of their nuclear weapons before a holocaust is caused by accident.

The former US defence secretary, Robert McNamara, and the former chief of the general staff, Lord Carver, described their opposition to nuclear weapons at a meeting at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Lord Carver said Britiain's nuclear deterrent cost nearly GBP 1 billion a year and has "made absolutely no contribution to maintaining peace".
