TWO veterans of the Cold War yesterday urged the British and
American governments to get rid of their nuclear weapons before a
holocaust is caused by accident.
The former US defence secretary, Robert McNamara, and the former
chief of the general staff, Lord Carver, described their opposition
to nuclear weapons at a meeting at the Edinburgh International
Science Festival.
Lord Carver said Britiain's nuclear deterrent cost nearly GBP 1
billion a year and has "made absolutely no contribution to
maintaining peace".
Mr McNamara, who was defence secretary to presidents Kennedy and
Johnson, said that nuclear weapons had no military role and insisted
