A DISTINGUISHED director's latest film has been rejected by the
Edinburgh Film Festival because organisers decided a sex scene was
too explicit.
The Danish director, Lars Von Trier, won critics' plaudits and
Cannes awards for Breaking the Waves two years ago, and the actress
Emily Watson gained an Oscar nomination for her work in the film.
But his latest low-tech film, The Idiots, features a 40-second
penetration scene which in theory would not be allowed in a British
sex shop, never mind on cinema release.
Like other festivals, Edinburgh does not have to wait for British
Board of Film Classification clearance to show films, which can be
authorised by the local council.
