Article: Scots firms' performance still above UK average

COMPANIES in Scotland continue to achieve much higher profit margins than anywhere else in the UK, according to a survey published today.

However, the survey warns that the economy in most other parts of Britain could slip into recession because the downturn in exports and manufacturing is spreading into the service sector.

The only other areas to avoid the worst of the downturn are south- east England and East Anglia, said the report.

The analysis by Experian of profitability at the UK's 1,000 largest firms, almost 100 of them in Scotland, shows that average profit margins in Scotland rose from 11.1 per cent to 11.4 per cent in the first quarter of 1998. The average for British industry as ...
