Article: Rebel Welsh clubs fined GBP 150,000

CARDIFF and Swansea were each fined GBP 150,000 last night for three separate breaches of Welsh Rugby Union regulations.

The clubs were informed of the severe penalty following a two- hour meeting of the WRU's general committee in Cardiff.

Cardiff and Swansea were found guilty of playing cross-border fixtures against England's top Premiership clubs together with negotiating their own television contracts. For each of the offences they were fined GBP 60,000, while a further GBP 30,000 each was imposed for using unsanctioned referees to control their controversial fixtures.
