AFTER 18 months consulting focus groups and analysing expensive
market research data, the BBC yesterday came up with a statement of
the blindlingly obvious: viewers expect the corporation to provide
intelligent news coverage over a range of stories.
The "programme strategy review" was launched by Sir John Birt,
the
director-general, and the resulting hefty tome is full of Birt-
esque
mission statements and strategy-speak.
But among all the jargon in BBC News: The Future, there is no
clear indication of what the brave new world has in store for the
corporation's top news presenters. They have spent the past few
months in limbo, their contracts un-renewed and their futures
uncertain.
