Article: Airlines threaten to poach military pilots

THE Royal Air Force is facing a serious shortage of pilots as civil airlines threaten to poach Britain's "top guns" as part of an aggressive recruiting drive, it emerged yesterday.

Service chiefs warn that their ranks could be left severely depleted unless more fliers can be persuaded to stay on until their late thirties.

They fear that many RAF pilots, trained at a cost of GBP 3 million each and hit by low morale through defence cuts, may be tempted by higher salaries and more lucrative packages offered by civilian operators.
