Article: Asda carves itself a victory in the Battle of Parma Ham

PARMA ham producers yesterday lost their court battle to stop the Asda chain selling ham sliced and packed in Britain.

A consortium representing the manufacturers of Italy's air-cured delicacy failed in its attempt to prevent the supermarket chain from selling genuine Parma ham which was not prepared and packaged in the region.

Three Court of Appeal judges in London ruled that though European Commission regulations gave Parma a "protected designation of origin" (PDO) - like Champagne and Cornish clotted cream - strict Italian rules on slicing and packaging did not apply in the UK.
