THE owner of Scotland's most expensive petrol station claimed yesterday that his business was barely breaking even.

Although John MacKenzie, who owns the D & N MacKenzie petrol station in Port Charlotte, Islay, admits his prices may be among the highest in the country, he says he is tempted to shut up shop because he is struggling to make ends meet as a result of high costs and a low turnover.

He said he had only kept the petrol station open as a service for the islanders. Last week the petrol station was identified as the most expensive in Scotland in a nationwide study by the Automobile Association.
