WHEN they laid down the template of quiet verse followed by
screaming chorus and ear-shredding guitar hooks, little did the
Pixies know that it would be appropriated by so many shy indie boys
on both sides of the Atlantic.
And while a plethora of British bands have taken the Pixies'
basic
blueprint and twisted it into their own shape, once in a while there
is a band who get it right. Idlewild's opening number, You Just Have
To Be Who You Are, was a good example of what can be produced when
the formula does work: ominously rumbling drums and bass lurked in
the background as singer Roddy Woomble quietly spat out the opening
verse, a prelude to a demonically loud and energetic chorus which
saw ...
