Article: Airlines threaten to cut air traffic cash over flight delays

AIRLINES are threatening to withhold payments to air traffic authorities in the wake of worsening flight delays across Europe.

The Association of European Airlines, whose members include British Airways and British Midland, has said it is considering stopping its payments to air traffic control services in a number of countries unless flight capacity is increased.

According to new figures, the number of European flights officially classified as late has almost doubled in the last year. In the first three months of 1999, 10,500 flights were late, compared with 5,324 in 1998 - itself the worst year for a decade.
