PAUL Sacher, reputedly one of the world's richest men, devoted
his
life and his fortune to his love of music. He and other family
members had a controlling stake in the pharmaceutical giant Roche
Holding AG, with an estimated joint fortune of at least GBP 11
billion
Sacher was one of the world's most influential arts patrons and
inspiration to countless contemporary composers, including Benjamin
Britten, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok and Bohuslav
Martinu. Britten once described him as a "model as patron and
performer".
