Born: 3 December, 1898, in Colinton Died: 8 July, 1999, in
Edinburgh, aged 100
ERIC Dott was the younger brother of Norman Dott, the pioneering
Edinburgh surgeon, and was in his unassuming way as remarkable a man
as his more famous brother.
In his teens, Eric's ambition was to become a minister. He
inherited a fiercely idealistic outlook on life from his father,
Peter McOmish Dott, proprietor of the picture-dealing firm Aitken
Dott & Son, and at the age of 11 had been responsible for the start
of regular churchgoing by the family - his mother, brother Norman and
three sisters. His mother was delighted, and the Dotts were no
