A NATIONWIDE search to find women called Penny Black has discovered the namesakes are considerably rarer than the postage stamp collector's item.

The Royal Mail in London set out to find women named Penny Black to attend a celebration of what is considered to be the world's most famous stamp later this month.

It had hoped to bring all the namesakes together to celebrate the real thing for the first time.

Despite a major publicity campaign, only one Penny Black has been found alive and well and living - in Scotland.
