Modern western-style living creates more misery for allergy
sufferers. The "dream home" with deep pile carpets, plush soft
furnishings, double glazing and central heating sounds lovely, but
it may spell misery for asthma or eczema sufferers because it
creates an ideal breeding ground for the house dust mite whose
faeces and secretions are prime causes of allergies.
The conditions which make us feel warm and comfortable make our
homes stuffy and damp - just what these pesky little beasties love.
An American survey found half of all bedding they examined contained
enough dust mite allergens to cause an allergic reaction and nearly
a quarter had levels high enough to exacerbate asthma.
