COUNCIL tax bills have risen by 39 per cent since Labour came to
power, it was claimed last night.
Kenneth Gibson, local government spokesman for the Scottish
National Party, said figures released by the executive had shown
that in 1996-97, Scots had paid 875 pounds million in council tax
bills. For the current year the figure had gone up by GBP 338
million to GBP 1,213 million.
Mr Gibson said this was a "massive" 39 per cent increase in the
