Eczema. The term describes a number of skin conditions which show
common symptoms, including inflammation, dryness, flaking, and
sometimes blisters. Itchy and uncomfortable, it ranges from mild to
very severe. Atopic eczema, the most common form, is on the increase
for reasons not fully known - it may have to do with aspects of
modern life such as central heating.
Treatments. These include steroids, emollients and
antihistamines. According to the National Eczema Society, the most
important and under-realised treatment is a good emollient regime,
with oily baths and moisturisers for the skin, and the use of a soap
