THOUSANDS of miscarriages could be prevented every year, after
scientists identified what they believe to be one of the most common
causes.
Researchers found evidence that previously unexplained
miscarriages were triggered by a surge of oxygen that hit the foetus
a third of the way through pregnancy.
Now research using tiny monitors placed in the placentas of 30
women has found that, early in pregnancy, the level of oxygen in the
blood entering the umbilical cord was very low. But between the
eighth and 15th week, the levels shot up three-fold.
Graham Burton, from Cambridge University, who carried out the
research with University College London colleague Eric Jauniaux,
