AMERICA'S cheese lovers are going crackers about plans to ban
some of Europe's greatest delicacies.
Roquefort, Gruyre, Parmigiano-Reggiano and British cheddars and
Stilton could all be removed from American dinner tables if the
country's Food and Drug Administration imposes restrictions on
cheeses made with raw milk.
The FDA insists cheeses made with raw, or unpasteurised, milk -
the ingredient of many of the best cheeses - could pose a serious
health hazard and contain listeria, salmonella and E. coli.
But cheese devotees say that if you use pasteurised milk on posh
cheeses you lose most of the flavour.
"This whole thing is crazy," said Steven Jenkins, cheesemonger
