UNIVERSITIES are to be given extra cash to help fund the
education of poorer students, in an attempt to stem high drop-out
rates among undergraduates from low-income families.
They will be given a cash premium of pounds 750 for every student
they accept from a family earning less than pounds 10,000 a year, to
help provide extra learning support.
Wendy Alexander, the minister for education and life-long
learning, has revealed the new measure, which is aimed at keeping
poorer students in higher education once they have started degree
courses.
The move has received a cautious welcome from universities, who
said that drop-out levels among poorer students will only fall if
the extra cash is ...
