MORE than 50 patients remain locked up in Scotland's State
Hospital - although doctors have said they are well enough to leave.
A total of 56 mentally ill criminals are "entrapped" at high-
security Carstairs because there is nowhere else for them to go, The
Scotsman can reveal.
One patient has been in Carstairs for more than four years after
doctors said he should be discharged, two patients for three years,
seven for two years and 12 for more than a year.
They are adding to overcrowding at Carstairs, which has a 225-
bed capacity. At present, it has 246 patients and has had to open an
emergency ward.
