WASHINGTON, April 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Northeast-Midwest
region would have received an additional $11.85 billion in fiscal
1991 if federal spending per person in the region had been equal to
the average amount per person for all 50 states, according to a
report released today by the Northeast-Midwest Institute.
Federal spending in northeastern and midwestern states -- in the
form of grants, salaries and wages, procurement, direct payments to
individuals and other spending -- totaled $4,036 per person in fiscal
1991, compared to $4,229 in the South and West.
Despite continued regional inequities, the Northeast-Midwest
region's share of federal spending has improved slightly in the last
