Article: Endangered Species Law Undermined, Underfunded, Says Report

WASHINGTON, April 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The nation's law protecting endangered species has been "underapplied, underfunded, undermined and under-enforced," and has resulted in a backlog of species waiting for protection and a "crisis in wildlife conservation," according to a report released today by Defenders of Wildlife.

The report, "Saving Endangered Species," comes one day before Congress opens hearings on renewing the Endangered Species Act.

According to Defenders, in the two decades in which the Act has been in existence, the federal government has listed "only a fraction of the species in need of protection." Only slightly more than 600 U.S. species have actually been listed for ...
