Your hair is dead. Long live your hair. Confused? The hair we see
- and tease, comb, colour and twirl - is quite dead. A hair shaft
has no blood running through it, no feeling, no muscle or nerves.
And yet, according to the fascinating facts to be found on
trichologist Philip Kingsley's website (www.philipkingsley.co.uk),
this dead filament is capable of some pretty nifty tricks.
"A healthy hair can stretch up to 30 per cent of its length, can
absorb its weight in water, and can swell up to 20 per cent of its
diameter. An average head of hair, when twisted together, can
support 23 tons in weight - it's stronger than copper wire of the
same diameter."
