Thomas David Simpson Bell, soldier and lawyer
Born: 23 May, 1920, in Edinburgh Died: 11 April, 2001, in
Edinburgh, aged 80
TOM Bell was born in Edinburgh and followed both his brothers to
the Royal High School, where he did well in English and History and
won prizes for swimming and boxing. He was two years in the First XV
and a sergeant in the Officers' Training Corps.
He enrolled at Edinburgh University, at the same time starting an
apprenticeship with John Clerk Brodie & Sons. He volunteered as soon
as the Second World War broke out and was called to join the army at
the end of his first year. He was at first sent to an Artillery
