Giant pistons that will keep our dynamic earth revolving

THE Earth is being "driven" by a four-piston heat engine deep beneath the surface which controls earthquakes, volcanoes, shifting continents and even climate change.

Scientists in Canada have developed a model of the inner workings of the Earth that explains a long-standing mystery of how features on the surface of the planet are constantly changing due to forces far beneath the ground.

Alessandro Forte, of the University of Western Ontario, said the team's work showed the engine slowly churning deep within the planet's interior.
