Article: Eight out of ten Britons back Kyoto treaty

EIGHT out of ten Britons favour adopting the tough environmental measures to combat greenhouse gases agreed in the Kyoto treaty, according to a survey published yesterday.

The poll, showing overwhelming support for the international pact, came as George W Bush reaffirmed his decision to pull the United States out of negotiations to finalise the treaty, on the eve of a visit to Europe.

President Bush, who has been widely criticised by European leaders for his stance, called for research into technological solutions to slow greenhouse emissions - without hurting the economy.
