ALBANIAN rebel leaders yesterday repeated their pledges to hand
over their weapons to a British-led NATO force.
But the shooting of a Macedonian policemen yesterday brought the
first serious breach of a ceasefire that has paved the way for the
NATO disarmament mission.
Most of an advance guard of 400 British troops will leave for
Macedonia today, their commander said, preparing for a NATO force of
some 3,500 troops.
But the success of "Operation Essential Harvest" hangs on whether
a peace deal holds, and in particular if the Albanian guerrilla
commanders live up to a promise to turn in their guns at NATO
collection points.
