THE constant comparisons made between Strathclyde Police's
handling of the Surjit Singh Chhokar murder inquiry and the
Metropolitan Police handling of the Stephen Lawrence investigation
has done much to cloud the overall issue.
The parallels between the tragic murder of Mr Chhokar in November
1998 and Stephen Lawrence created many difficulties, especially
when, in reality, in terms of the police investigation, there are no
similarities whatsoever between the two inquiries.
Dr Raj Jandoo makes this important point abundantly clear in his
report. Unlike the Lawrence case, arrests were made within six days
of Mr Chhokar's tragic death .
