THE United States' top intelligence analyst for Cuba has been
charged with spying for the Caribbean island state and faces the
death penalty if convicted.
Ana Belen Montes, 44, who has worked at the Defence Intelligence
Agency (DIA) since 1985, is the highest US official accused of
spying for Cuba. The case could go far in explaining how efforts by
the United States to penetrate Cuba were thwarted in the last
decade.
Montes was in a position to know "90 per cent of what we're doing
in Cuba on an intelligence front and everything we know about Cuba",
said a US official. "It's the crown jewels."
