WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by Juanita Dunlap Smith, chief organizer for the Maryland Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals: There is no evidence to support a recent contention by business groups that collective bargaining drives up costs. What escalates costs and reduces quality are efforts to contract out work to people who don't have the appropriate expertise. Treating state employees as the career professionals they are promotes a friendly and positive business climate and enhances productivity. Failing to pay experienced employees what they're worth and treating them as dispensable commodities does not.
