SEOUL, May 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Representatives of the Antarctic
and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), who have been monitoring
the 19th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting here for the
past two weeks, today expressed grave disappointment at the
lack of meaningful progress by the 26 member governments at
the meeting.
Three and a half years after the signing of the Madrid Protocol
-- a landmark agreement that prohibits mining in Antarctica
and sets new environmental standards for Antarctica -- ASOC
warned that the region is still at risk of serious environmental
damage.
