What: A U.S. House of Representatives vote on H.R. 260, the
national park closure bill sponsored by Reps. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.)
and James Hansen (R-Utah). Under the bill, 315 of the nation's 369
national park units will be reviewed for possible removal from the
National Park System. (List of Threatened Parks by State follows.)
The controversial bill, strongly opposed by the 450,000-member
National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA), will be
considered under a suspension of the rules. Floor debate will be
limited to less than an hour. No amendments will be allowed. A
two-thirds majority will be required for passage.
