Article: American College of Surgeons Urges Transition to New Physician Payment Rates Under Medicare

CHICAGO, Oct. 5, /U.S. Newswire/ -- The American College of Surgeons today expressed alarm about provisions in the Medicare budget proposals under debate in Congress that would establish a single fee schedule conversion factor for all physicians' services within the next few months.

The House proposal would establish a single conversion factor of $34.60 as of Jan. 1, 1996. The Senate Finance Committee approved a bill last week that would set the conversion factor at $35.42. These proposals would translate into an approximately 12 percent reduction in Medicare payments for all surgical services and would heavily penalize surgeons, who have performed appropriately under the current Medicare ...
