WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by Undersecretary of Education Marshall Smith on release of proposed U.S. History standards:

The proposed U.S. history standards released by the UCLA National Center for History in the Schools represents the work of a wide cross-section of historians and teachers who have participated in this effort to encourage and advance the study of history in the American classroom.

The funding and selection of the grantee for this project was approved in December 1991 by Lynne vs. Cheney, the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities in conjunction with then-Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander.
