WASHINGTON, April 28 /U.S. Newswire/ -- What helps smokers cut
back on the number of cigarettes lit up each day? A new study of
Native Americans discovered some curious smoke signals: Smokers who
attended church each week used 35 percent less cigarettes per day
than smokers who didn't attend.
The study of 400 Lumbee Indians in tobacco-laden North Carolina
found "smokers who had not attended church in the past year smoked
significantly more cigarettes per day than current smokers attending
church more often," researchers from Wake Forest University School of
Medicine noted. This was the first study to uncover this link
between going to church and reduced cigarette consumption.
