WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement by T. Kumar, advocacy director for Asia, Amnesty International USA, on events in Pakistan:

Amnesty International USA fears for the safety of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whom we believe is being held under "protective custody" in a guesthouse near the Islamabad Airport. We urge U.S. Ambassador William Milam to immediately seek assurances from coup leaders that Shariff, his family and other government detainees will not be harmed. Ambassador Milam also should seek to meet with the Prime Minister to verify his well-being and to provide a visible expression of U.S. concern for his safety and that of his supporters.
