WASHINGTON, June 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Humane Society of the
United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal protection
organization, commends Governor Angus King and Maine lawmakers for
enacting L.D. 1679, a bill that increases the penalty for animal
cruelty. The new law, which goes into effect on September 21,
expands the definition of animal cruelty, establishes the category
of aggravated animal cruelty, raises the fines for both civil and
criminal convictions, and increases the penalty from a misdemeanor
to a felony for repeat offenders and for all convictions of
aggravated animal cruelty.
