WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The March of Dimes applauds
the National Governors Association's unanimous vote to support
coverage of pregnant women and newborns in the State Children's
Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
Convening in Providence, Rhode Island for its annual summer
meeting, the nation's governors endorsed a proposal August 7, 2001
that would give states the option to cover income eligible pregnant
women over the age of 19 in SCHIP. In addition, the governors also
call on Congress to give them the authority to enroll newborns in
the program. Both proposals require Federal legislation to be
enacted in order for states to move forward with this program
expansion.
