WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- For the first time since
the Depression, American workers may be allowed to compete with
federal prisoners for the right to manufacture goods for the
Department of Defense. Current law forces DoD to purchase needed
products from the Federal Prison Industries.
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002,
enabling the Secretary of Defense to conduct market research before
being forced to purchase inmate-manufactured goods, has now won
passage in both the House and Senate. If prisoner-manufactured
products are not comparable to private sector products in price,
