WASHINGTON, June 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- On a vote of 218-204, The
House of Representatives today voted to eliminate $817 million in
child care funding that had been approved by its Appropriations
Committee.
Sanford Newman, president of the anti-crime organization Fight
Crime: Invest in Kids, issued this statement on behalf of the 700
police chiefs, sheriffs, district attorneys and victims of violence
who make up the group:
"Hundreds of law enforcement leaders and crime victims have
written Congress this month to say the most powerful step Congress
could take to cut crime and violence is to boost funding for child
care and after-school programs.
"Two-hundred eighteen House members today ...
