The Dallas Morning News reported today that Texas could forfeit $449 million in federal funds for children's health insurance because state agencies neglected the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Such oversight is consistent with Governor George W. Bush's neglect for children without health insurance in Texas. Bush sought to deny health insurance to 220,000 children by fighting Democratic efforts in Texas to expand CHIP. Burdensome hurdles in Texas have prevented nearly 600,000 eligible children from enrolling in Medicaid.
