WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Center for Marine
Conservation (CMC) applauds the signing today by President Clinton
of the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Conservation
of Sea Turtles (IAC). This is the first comprehensive international
treaty for the protection of endangered sea turtles and their
habitats.
To bring the convention into force the IAC must be ratified by
eight countries. Presently, seven nations, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico,
Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the U.S. have ratified it. Under
the IAC participating countries agree to conserve sea turtle
habitat, protect nesting beaches, limit intentional and accidental
